Mobile Marketing Attribution Without IDFA
You can answer many important acquisition questions without building a cross-app identity graph. Use platform attribution, campaign context and first-party product events to measure the journey you control.
Attribution does not have to mean cross-app tracking
Mobile marketing attribution is often discussed as if it always requires a persistent advertising identifier. It does not. For owned acquisition and product analytics, the important job is usually narrower: retain the campaign context supplied by the platform and connect it to behaviour inside your app.
That gives a team answers such as which Apple Search Ads keywords complete onboarding, which Google campaigns reach activation and which sources create subscribers. It does not require following the person across unrelated apps.
Apple Search Ads through AdServices
Apple's AdServices framework supports attribution for Apple Search Ads. The application obtains a short-lived token and sends it to a server for resolution. This can return campaign and keyword identifiers without accessing IDFA and without triggering an App Tracking Transparency prompt.
Join those identifiers to Search Ads campaign metadata and spend, then keep them on the same first-party journey as onboarding and purchase events. Read more about Apple Search Ads attribution.
Google Play Install Referrer
On Android, Google Play Install Referrer lets the installed app retrieve referral context associated with the Play Store installation. Capture it early, store the resulting source and campaign properties, and avoid overwriting them when the user signs in.
For web acquisition, campaign UTMs and supported Google click IDs can be stored on the first-party visitor journey. These methods measure the relationship between your campaign and your product without relying on an Apple IDFA.
Use first-party milestones after acquisition
Attribution quality is only valuable when the product outcome is clear. Track a small sequence of events that represent progress:
install_or_first_visit
account_created
onboarding_completed
first_value_reached
subscription_started
The acquisition source should remain attached throughout that sequence. With mobile app conversion tracking, the team can compare both conversion rate and users lost at each step.
Be precise about what the data proves
Platform attribution is not a perfect causal experiment. Privacy thresholds, attribution windows, unavailable fields and platform reporting rules can all affect coverage. Label unknown or unattributed traffic honestly, document the window being used, and avoid forcing every user into a paid channel.
For budget decisions, compare enough users over a stable window and use the same conversion definition across campaigns. Treat small differences as directional until the sample is large enough to support the conclusion.
A privacy-aware mobile attribution checklist
- Collect only acquisition fields needed for campaign analysis.
- Do not put personal data into campaign parameters or event properties.
- Keep source data inside the first-party product journey.
- Retain an honest unattributed category.
- Document attribution windows and platform limitations.
- Restrict agent and team access to the projects they need.
- Require human approval before changing campaign spend.
